The country of India, which is situated in the South Asia is also known officially as the Republic of India. India, apart from being the second most populous country as well as the most populous democracy in the world, it is also considered to be the seventh largest country as far as the geographical area is concerned.
The most important fact that is associated with India is that it boasts of the largest democracy in the world and it is required to mention here that the Constitution of India defines this country as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. It is also to be noted here that India also boasts of a federal form of government as well as of a bicameral parliament (two parliamentary chambers) that operates under a parliamentary system that adheres to the Westminster Style, which is a democratic parliamentary system of government that is modeled after the system of the United Kingdom.
About the Government of India it could be said that the three branches of government are the Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary and it is to be noted here that the President of India, who is the official head of the state is elected for a five year term indirectly by an electoral college whereas, the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the President is the de facto head of the government and the Prime Minister is entitled to exercise the executive powers.
It is also essential to state here that the legislature of India is the bicameral Parliament that comprises of the upper house, known as the Rajya Sabha and the lower house, known as the Lok Sabha. This Lok Sabha is also referred to as the House of People. The Rajya Sabha is made up of 250 members, who are entitled to serve a period of six-year terms and these members are elected directly by the state and territorial legislatures, whereas the Lok Sabha is made up of 545 members and these members are elected directly by the popular vote to represent the constituencies for a period of five year terms.
The executive branch comprises of the President, the Vice President and the Council of Ministers and the affairs of the President, the Vice President and the Council of Ministers are taken care of by the Prime Minister.
The Judiciary of India comprises of the Supreme Court and its affairs are under the control of the Chief Justice of India.
