Geography of India |
India, which is also known officially as the Republic of India, is also considered to be a Sovereign country that is situated in South Asia. It is also required to mention here that apart from being the second most populous country, India is also the most populous democracy of the world.
As far as the Geography of India is concerned, it could be said that the major portions of the Indian subcontinent is seated on top of the Indian tectonic plate (minor tectonic plate) and the Indio ? Australian Plate (a name for two tectonic plates, which includes in itself the continent of Australia as well as the surrounding ocean that extends towards the northwest region and includes the Indian subcontinent as well as its adjacent waters).
It is also to be noted here that the Indian subcontinent in the early years was an integral part of the Gondwana (southern super continent) and began to drift towards the northeast region across the topography, which is now known as the Indian Ocean. It is also interesting to note that the collision with the Eurasian Plate (a tectonic plate that covers Eurasia, which is a landmass that comprises of Asia and Europe) and the subduction (a subduction zone is the meeting place of the two tectonic plates that move towards one another) resulted in the formation of the Himalayas.
This plate movement is also responsible for the creation of a trough in the seabed to the south of the Himalayas which was filled with the river borne sediment and this resulted in the formation of the Indo- Gangetic Plain and the original Indian plate came to be known as the peninsular India (the most oldest part as far as India is concerned) that extended towards the north of the Vindhya Range that adorns the Central India.
The major topographic features of India are the Thar Desert (situated in the western region of India), which is separated from the Aravalli Hills by the Gangetic Plain and the peninsular known as the Deccan Plateau.
The major rivers that have originated from the Himalayas and flows through the country of India are the Ganges, the Brahmaputra, the Kosi and the Yamuna and all these rivers flow into the Bay of Bengal. However, the major peninsular rivers of India are the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri and all these rivers also flow into the Bay of Bengal. It is to be noted here that the rivers Narmada and Tapti flow into the Arabian Sea.
The two coastal features of India are the Rann of Kutch (marshy region of the Thar Desert) and the Sunderbans of Delta and the two archipelagos of India are the Lakshawadeep (small union territory of India) and the Andaman and the Nicobar Islands (a union territory of India).
