Demography of India

India, which is officially known as the Republic of India, is a country that adorns the South Asia. It is interesting to note that this country is bounded to the south by the Indian Ocean, to the west by the Arabian Sea and to the east by the Bay of Bengal.

Regarding the Demography of India it could be said that since this country boasts of a population of 1.12 billion, it is considered to be the second most populous country of the world.

It is to be noted here that seventy percent of the population live in the rural areas, however things have changed to a certain extent now as in the recent years most of the people residing in the rural areas migrated to the larger cities and this is responsible to a great extent for an increase in the population of the urban areas. It is also essential to mention here that India is also the second most culturally, linguistically, genetically diverse geographical entity only after the African continent.

India is also known for its two major linguistic families, which are the Indo Aryan and the Dravidian.

74 percent of the population speak Indo Aryan and only 24 percent speak the Dravidian. The other languages that are spoken by the people of India come from the families, which are primarily the Tibeto- Burman linguistic families and the Austro-Asiatic linguistic families.

Though Hindi is regarded to be the official language of India as it is spoken by the majority of the people of India, the constitution of India recognizes 21 other languages and these 21 languages are either spoken abundantly or have attained classical status.

About the Demography of India it could also be said that about 80.5 percent of the population of India are Hindu, followed by the Muslims (13.4 percent) and the Christians, the Sikhs, the Buddhists and the Jains make up 2.3 percent, 1.9 percent, 0.8 percent and 0.4 percent of the population respectively. The Tribals make up 8.1 percent of the total population.

The literacy rate of India is 53.7 percent as far as the females are concerned and 75.3 percent far as the males are concerned.
